Frequently-asked questions:

Individual Therapy Anchor
  • Do you conduct any appointments online?

Yes and no. In my experience (and this is supported by current research) something important is lost when the therapist and the client are not together in the same room. We know that for most people, certain life experiences (sporting events, concerts, family gatherings, etc.) are simply more meaningful in person. I would include therapy as one of those experiences, and I am reluctant to give any client any less than the absolute best. However, I understand the need for convenience. Both my experience and my research indicate that virtual therapy can help people attend appointments they might otherwise miss, when life gets in the way. Therefore, I prefer to see clients in my office but I will conduct appointments either by video or phone if there are exceptional circumstances preventing you from attending in person. • For individual therapy clients, what types of issues do you help with?

I see individual clients for a wide range of concerns. A particular area of specialty for me is helping clients to manage their relationships with others in a healthy and fulfilling manner. Additionally, I have expertise in helping with depression, anxiety, emotion regulation, parenting, concerns around sexuality and identity, life changes, body image, and many other issues.

  • What is "Walk and Talk" therapy?

For solo clients who are interested and meet certain criteria, I can conduct walking therapy appointments along the Ruston Way waterfront. "Walk and Talk" therapy is not for everyone, and we would discuss the specifics of this type of therapy before beginning. For a good article that explains "Walk and Talk" therapy, click HERE

  • Do you work with people in non-traditional relationships?

Absolutely. In years past my specialty was traditionally called "marriage counseling." I don't use that phrase anymore, although I do sometimes use the colloquial term "couples therapy," as it fits the circumstances of most of my clients. However, it would be most accurate for me to say my specialty is "relationship therapy." I have experience and am very comfortable working with people in all sorts of consensual, non-traditional relationships: Queer/LGBTQ+ partners, polyamory, consensual non-monogamy (CNM) / ethical non-monogamy (ENM), BDSM relationships, co-parenting, etc. To me, the ultimate success and satisfaction with your relationship is what matters most, regardless of how well it aligns with tradition. In my office you can expect an entirely judgment-free and shaming-free experience.

  • Do you work with couples whose faith is central to their relationship?

Yes, absolutely. I understand that for some couples their spirituality plays an essential role in their relationship and can be a source of conflict and/or unity. Furthermore, it can be important for some couples that their relationship be a reflection and a celebration of their religious values; I believe that effective therapy can absolutely be tailored to these shared values. However, all that being said, I am not a spiritual advisor and I will not bring a religious agenda into our therapy sessions myself. Instead, I follow the lead of the partners regarding the role of religion in our therapy work.

  • Where is your office located?

It is very important to me that we have a professional, comfortable, and private space for our in-office sessions. My office is located in the "Old Town" neighborhood of Tacoma, near the beautiful Ruston Way waterfront. Click on "Office" above for more details.

  • What are your fees? Do you accept medical insurance?

These questions are answered on my "Fees" page - click on "Fees" above.
