Mental health & insurance
It is no secret that mental health providers -- psychologists, counselors, etc. -- are leaving insurance networks in droves. The reasons for this are many, and they are not always easy to explain. Below, I have provided some resources that do a pretty good job of explaining the current situation.
Click here for an investigation by NPR and ProPublica, in which they interviewed hundreds of mental health providers who have left insurance networks.
Click here for a PBS New Hour video clip, summarizing the NPR/ProPublica report above.
Click here for a well-written and thoughtful blog post by a mental health practice owner. She references the NPR/ProPublica investigation, and provides more details of insurance practices.
Click here for an article by the American Psychological Association explaining how insurance companies create various obstacles for mental health providers.
Click here for a video in which John Oliver gives a humorous (and tragic) report on the state of mental health care. He discusses insurance coverage, provider shortages, mental health "chatbots," and online provider mills.
